Jose S Buenconsejo is a professor of Musicology at the College of Music, University of the Philippines Diliman. He studied Musicology at the University of the Philippines, the University of Hawai'i, and the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his doctorate in 1999. A recipient of grants from the East-West Center, Asian Cultural Council, and Mellon Foundation, he has taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Hong Kong (while on a postdoctoral fellowship). Dr. Buenconsejo served as dean of the UP College of Music from 2010 to 2017 and, at present, is the liaison officer for the Philippines in the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM). His video documentary “Seven Dances of Life” was nominated Best Documentary in the 2018 Gawad Urian Awards and the book he edited, Philippine Modernities: Music, Performing Arts, and Language: 1880-1941, won the 2018 Best Book in the Social Science by the National Book Development Board and Manila Critics Circle.


Research Interests: (1) myth and ritual (2) cultural history (3) media studies, and (4) popular culture.
